Why you’ll love this DIY Lip Scrub Recipe
- ALL NATURAL – Many conventional store-bought lip scrubs are filled with toxic ingredients that you can’t pronounce, and we don’t want that in any of our body products! This DIY lip scrub is made with only three natural ingredients, so you can rest easy that this scrub is safe for everyone.
- READY IN MOMENTS – This sugary lip scrub takes just seconds to make! Simply combine all your ingredients in a bowl, mix, and store. No hassle or wait time!
- GREAT HANDMADE GIFT – Spread the lavender love with this thoughtful and personalized present. Perfect for the holidays and Mother’s Day!
Equipment
To make this homemade lip scrub, you’ll need:
- Small bowl
- Spoon
- Storage containers (I like these .5 oz pots for lip balms, scrubs, and more)
Ingredients
- Granulated sugar – You can use any sugar you want for this recipe. I like to use organic cane sugar.
- Your favorite carrier oil – I like to use almond oil or coconut oil, but you can use any other oil you like.
- Lavender essential oil – Make sure to find a high-quality essential oil. Beware of labels that say “fragrance oil” or do not include the Latin name of the herb. The most commonly available type of lavender is lavandula angustifolia.
- Dried lavender (optional) – This makes it obvious what’s inside and the dried flowers act like a gentle exfoliant.
How to Make Lavender Lip Scrub
- Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and stir them well.
- Place the scrub into your desired container and use!
Storing Suggestions
Store this homemade lip scrub in an airtight container, like a glass jar, in a cool, dry place for best results. Make sure the container is completely clean and dry to prevent the scrub from spoiling. If left open, the sugar can crystallize and harden.
I recommend labeling the jar with the date so that you can keep track of the freshness.
You can also use a plastic container if you plan to use this sugar scrub in the shower.
Tips & Variations
- Add other essential oils. This lip scrub would be wonderful with a drop of lemon essential oil or grapefruit. Just be careful not to add too much citrus as it can be phototoxic.
- Be cautious with coconut oil. Since coconut oil is solid at room temperature, it can become hard to use during the winter months. I usually use liquid carrier oils, like almond oil or jojoba oil, instead.
- Adapt with other herbs. Instead of using lavender, try using dried roses and rose oil, chamomile, calendula, or another dried herb. Have fun with it!
- Be careful if your lips are overly cracked. Scrubbing lips that are already severely cracked can irritate the skin and lead to inflammation. Add more oil to the mix for a gentler, more hydrating treatment. Instead of scrubbing, you can pat the mixture on with your fingers and let it sit for a minute or two. Lavender is amazing for healing cuts, redness, and irritation.
- Try different carrier oils. Vitamin E oil is an excellent choice for soothing dry skin. It is naturally anti-inflammatory and provides essential nourishment to the skin. You can also use olive oil, rosehip oil, or sunflower oil.
How to Use Lavender Lip Scrub
To use, simply apply a small amount directly to your lips, and massage it in a circular motion with your finger. Then, either rinse with warm water or wipe off with a damp, warm washcloth. Use once a week for best results.
Note: It’s not recommended to use sugar scrubs on your face at all. Just use it on your lips (or body)!
FAQs
Dried lavender is recommended because it has a longer shelf-life and is more suitable for that scrub texture.
Up to 6 months when properly stored in a jar or airtight container. Make sure that the container is clean and dry before storing, and keep the lid on to maintain the moisture.
