What is lavender salt scrub?

Salt scrubs are made by combining different salt with oil, and they are used as an exfoliant to hydrate your body and polish away dead skin cells.

There are lots of different types of salts and oils you can choose from and so many different scents or add-ins, but it’s really just as simple as salt + oil.

This lavender salt scrub uses real lavender essential oil and dried lavender buds to give it a really relaxing scent, perfect for unwinding after a busy day!

Equipment

To make your own lavender salt scrub, you just need a small bowl and a spoon. It also helps to have a mason jar or airtight container to hold your scrub between uses and to keep it from drying out.

Ingredients

  • Salt: You can use any type of coarse salt for this scrub, like dead sea salt, natural sea salt, Himalayan salt, etc. I prefer to use Epsom salt (which is not technically a type of salt) because it has the perfect texture for a scrub, has soothing magnesium, and is affordable.
  • Sweet almond oil: My favorite skincare oil is sweet almond oil because it is so gentle and nourishing. I also like to use olive oil, but it can add a yellowish tint.
  • Lavender essential oil: Made by distilling the oils from lavender flowers, lavender oil adds a concentrated lavender scent.
  • Lavender buds: These are completely optional, but dried lavender buds make it obvious what is in this scrub, and they’re fun!

Storing

How to Use Lavender Salt Scrub

It’s pretty intuitive and easy to use a scrub. There are a couple of simple rules to remember:

  • Always rinse your skin with warm water first.
  • The best time to use a scrub is after a hot bath or shower when your skin is already soft and fully hydrated.
  • Gently rub in a circular motion to polish away any dead skin.
  • Avoid using scrubs on your face; they are far too harsh.
  • Limit using your body scrubs to 1-2 times per week.

Tips & Variations

  • Change up the oil: Instead of sweet almond oil, you can also use coconut oil, grapeseed oil, olive oil, rice bran oil, jojoba oil, apricot kernel oil, or another type of oil suited for your skin type.
  • Add another scent: This sea salt scrub smells so lovely with vanilla oil, rosemary, mint, sweet orange, and rose. These all go so well with the scent of lavender and are a great way to make a unique combination.
  • Mix in a butter: After sitting a while, the oil in this recipe may separate slightly from the salt. To resolve this, you can use a solid fat like coconut oil or a butter, like shea butter or mango butter, and whip the salt butter until creamy.
  • Scale up or down: Need just enough scrub for your next bath? Make a half batch. Want to give your scrub as a gift? Make a double or triple batch! One batch typically makes one half-pint jar.

FAQs

What’s the difference between salt and Epsom salt?

Technically, regular salt is sodium chloride. This is the type of salt you use to season your food, etc. On the other hand, Epsom salts contain magnesium sulfate. They actually are not salts at all, although you’ll sometimes see them labeled as mineral salts. They are a good source of magnesium, which can be very soothing, so they are commonly found in bath salts and salt scrubs.

How do you make a lavender salt scrub?

Combine 1 cup of salt with 1/4 cup of your favorite oil in a bowl. Stir in dried lavender buds and 10-20 drops of lavender essential. Store in a glass jar and use to give yourself smooth skin or to share as a lovely gift.

How long does lavender salt scrub last?

Since all of the ingredients in this scrub are shelf-stable, your scrub will last at room temperature for several months. Some recipes call for vitamin E as a preservative, which you can use if you’d like. For best results, I recommend using your scrub within a month or so.
