Make your own brown sugar lip scrub
It can be tempting to hit the store for body care products, but this simple recipe is too easy to skip! Once you make your own lip scrub once, you’ll be hooked. You won’t even miss your expensive lip exfoliator.
The sugar crystals serve as an exfoliant to slough out dry skin and dead cells. The olive oil nourishes your skin so you can have smooth lips all the time.
This recipe includes cinnamon, which makes it smell exactly like the holidays!
Ingredients
- 1/4 c brown sugar

How to use this brown sugar scrub
- With a clean spoon, scoop a small amount of scrub into your hands.
- With your index finger, gently rub the sugar scrub into your lips in a circular motion.
- Use hot water or a warm washcloth to remove the scrub from your lips.
- Follow up with your favorite lip balm.
- This cinnamon sugar scrub can be used on your entire body so try scrubbing your elbows, feet, or dry hands, too!
What if I’m out of brown sugar?
No problem! You can either make your own brown sugar or simply replace it with regular cane sugar.
Can I use dark brown sugar?
Yep! Dark brown sugar has more molasses so it might be a little stickier. Any types of brown sugar are fine.

Can I substitute different oils?
Absolutely! I used olive oil for a few reasons. First, it’s convenient and relatively inexpensive. Secondly, olive oil is high in squalane, which is an oil very similar to the oil our bodies naturally produce. Its natural healing properties make it nourishing and lovely to use, especially during the winter.
Feel free to use coconut oil, although it may solidify during the winter months.
I love using apricot oil or almond oil for skincare and they’d be perfect for this DIY sugar lip scrub!
What type of olive oil should I use?
Keep it easy. I have extra virgin olive oil on hand, so I used that. Just know that extra virgin has more of an “olive oil” smell. Refined olive oils will be more neutral.
DIY body scrubs make great handmade gifts!
Whether you’re gifting just because or you’re celebrating a holiday this DIY lip scrub recipe makes a wonderful gift!
It’s especially lovely during the holiday season when many of us struggle with dry, flaky skin. (Also, it’s absolutely delicious. Ask me how I know! ?)
Be sure to package your cinnamon brown sugar lip scrub in a cute jar or metal tin. Add a handmade label for an extra special touch!
