Keeping a batch of chocolate chip cookies in a jar makes it easier than ever to serve up warm, 100% from scratch cookies. Make a batch for yourself or tuck some into a gift basket as a thoughtful homemade gift!

Okay, I’m going to be a snob for a minute.
If you’ve ever received “gifts in a jar” before, you know that the quality of the mixes vary.
Sometimes, people (or companies) compromise on the overall quality or flavor just to have some sort of jar they can stick in a gift basket. It’s not about the final result; it’s about the packaging.
Friend, that is not how I operate.
This cookie mix is the real deal. It has the right ratio of sugars, plenty of chocolate chips, and a couple of extras to make sure the cookies come out chewy every time.
Consider this your new go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe, just with the dry ingredients already measured out for your convenience.
This cookie mix is one of my favorite options for homemade holiday gifts! Just add the jar to a gift basket with other baking mixes or perhaps a bottle of homemade vanilla extract. Perfect for bakers!
Ingredients
This cookie mix has all the ingredients you would expect to find and maybe 1 or 2 you wouldn’t. We’re layering the jars in this particular order:
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips (or chocolate chunks!)
- All purpose flour
- Cornstarch (my favorite ingredient for ultra chewy cookies)
- Baking soda
- Kosher salt (my go-to for all cooking and baking)
- Brown sugar
- White sugar
By layering just the shelf-stable ingredients, you can prep a bunch of jars and stash them in your pantry for months! Just make sure you seal the jars really well to keep any air out.

The secret to the best mason jar chocolate chip cookies
If you’ve ever baked a batch of cookies before, you probably know that most recipes start with creaming the butter and sugar. This adds air, which adds chewiness and makes your cookies anything but cake-y.
The problem with dry mixes is that if you mix everything all at once, you won’t get to cream the butter and sugar and you’ll probably overmix the dough.
This version is made to be mixed in 2-3 parts. By layering the sugars at the top, you can spoon them out to cream with the butter first. Then, you can add the dry ingredients and the chocolate chips.
The result? Chewy on the edges, gooey on the inside, and just enough chocolaty goodness.
Don’t worry! The printable recipe cards will explain this to your recipient so they pull off the bake every time.

Layering Recommendations
These jars are going to be PACKED, so I recommend using a wide-mouth quart mason jar and a canning funnel.
You will want to layer the ingredients in order of use in the recipe, so chocolate chips on the bottom, dry ingredients in the middle, and then brown sugar with the white sugar on top.
You will need to press down on the ingredients at multiple steps in the process. I like to use the back of a spoon to press down the flour and then again for the sugars.
If you don’t do this, the ingredients won’t all fit in the jar. You need to remove as much excess air as possible!

Tips & Variations
- Adjust the mix-ins. Instead of semi-sweet chocolate chips, you can use milk chocolate, substitute M&Ms, etc. You can go wild with it!
- Add an extra egg yolk for even softer, chewier cookies.
- Try substituting vanilla paste for the extract for extra vanilla flavor.
More DIY Baking Mixes
I’m working on making a bunch of baking dry mixes to make it even easier to bake from scratch.
This Cranberry Orange Muffin Mix in a Jar is one of my favorites. The muffins are so moist and flavorful, and it’s so nice to just grab a jar out of the pantry and get baking.
I’m also a fan of these Old Fashioned Pudding Mixes. They taste so much better than the boxes, and are so simple to make.
