Make your own spiced Christmas coffee at home with ground coffee and a few everyday spices! The warm cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, and allspice will give the coffee that “Christmas” flavor and it makes a great homemade holiday gift, too!

This recipe came about when I thought about how much I love cinnamon coffee. Way back in my college years, I used to buy the cheapest coffee I could since money was tight.
To make it more palatable, I’d sprinkle cinnamon overtop of the grounds before brewing. The warm cinnamon flavor would mask the flavor of the cheap coffee I had and it made every sip a little cozier!
It became something I really enjoyed and even now, I find myself craving it every once in a while.
I realized that if you could add cinnamon, you could certainly add other spices and instantly had to try some different flavor combos.
And if you’re adding spices while brewing, why not make a big jar of the mixture instead of measuring the spices out each time? You see where I’m going…
If you really want that classic, Christmas-y flavor, this particular blend will do just that.
It’s perfect for serving with Brioche French Toast Casserole and some Eggnog Scones alongside your Christmas brunch or make a few jars to tuck into gift baskets with your other homemade Christmas gifts!

Ingredients
You probably don’t even need to leave the house to make this one! You just need coffee and some spices…that’s it.
Coffee – You just need some sort of ground coffee, whether that’s a big tub of Folgers from the store or you want to grind whole beans at home. I had a bunch of French roast coffee beans in my pantry, so I ground those and I love the intensity of dark roast beans with the spices.
Use whatever type of ground coffee you prefer and/or that fits your budget. Remember, the spices will improve the flavor even of the cheapest coffee so you don’t need to spend a fortune here.
Spices – I used a mixture of cinnamon, cardamom, allspice, and nutmeg.
The flavor WILL be better if you use freshly ground whole spices or at least a high-quality cinnamon. I used the Royal Cinnamon from Burlap and Barrel which is incredible, but pricey.

How to Make Spiced Christmas Coffee Blend

Step 1: Combine ground spices and coffee together in a mason jar or container. Seal and shake thoroughly to combine.

Step 2: Attach the label with twine or ribbon and add to a holiday gift basket.
To brew: Use exactly as you would your favorite ground coffee using a coffee maker, Chemex, or French press. The coffee will be infused with the warm spices and you can add cream or sweeten to taste.

Storing Suggestions
Since you’re storing ground coffee and dried spices, the mixture will last indefinitely. However, the flavor of the coffee will be best within a month or so. The fresher, the better.

Tips & Variations
Adjust the spices. If you don’t like cardamom or want to add some ground cloves, please do! I love this blend as is, which is definitely cinnamon forward, but you can absolutely make your own custom blend.
A note on container size. One single batch makes enough for a pint mason jar. If you want to make a bigger batch, just double the ingredients and use a quart jar.

How to Serve Christmas Coffee
I’m a purist, so I traditionally just make a big pot of really strong, hot coffee and drink it black (yes, I know).
But, that’s the great thing about coffee – everyone can serve it however they’d like.
The spices add lots of flavor so you really just need sugar, maple syrup, or your favorite simple syrup (like this vanilla bean syrup) and some half and half, milk, or cream.
If you want to go all out, feel free to serve it with some whipped cream and a sprinkle of extra cinnamon on top.
(Or, you can make regular coffee and top it with gingerbread coffee creamer. So good!)

Honestly, this chewy honey gingerbread recipe would be a perfect match for this spiced coffee. It’s sweet with just enough warmth, and the spices would really work together.

Can you use instant coffee and put spices in “tea bag(s)” ? This would be good for camping etc.
Hi, there! I’m not totally sure. The ground spices could spill out of the tea bags and make the coffee too spiced to drink. Might be worth playing with, though!
Have you ever made with chocolate and spices??
I haven’t! I do make a spiced cocoa mix, but haven’t tried infusing cocoa powder with coffee grounds. Will definitely need to try it sometime!
