Ingredients

  • Sugar – Either cane sugar or brown sugar.
  • Fresh lemon juice – Fresh is best! If you don’t have fresh, you can always use concentrate, although it may not be as beneficial.
  • Lemon zest – This is optional but recommended if you want a really strong lemon scent.
  • Raw honey – Honey is extremely gentle and soothing on skin. It’s best to use raw, unpasteurized honey for all of honey’s health benefits.
  • Oil – Use your favorite skincare oil, like sweet almond oil, olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, or avocado oil.
  • Lemon essential oil – For a stronger lemon scent, feel free to add some steam-distilled lemon essential oil. (Note: The type of oil is important.)

How to Make Honey Lemon Sugar Scrub

  1. Mix sugar with lemon zest, honey, and oils in a small bowl. Stir to combine. Add a small amount of lemon juice and stir; add more until you read your desired consistency.
  2. If it is too runny for your liking, add an additional tablespoon of sugar.
  3. Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

How to Use Lemon Sugar Scrub with Honey

Start by running warm water over your skin. Add a quarter-sized amount of body scrub on your hand and gently rub it in circles to remove dead skin and hydrate. Repeat once if necessary. Rinse off the scrub and dry with a clean towel.

Note: It is not recommended to use this scrub on the face. Only use it on your body.

Tip: Use citrus safely!

Citrus oils and juices can be phototoxic, which means they can burn your skin in sunlight. If you’re adding lemon essential oil, it’s important to use steam-distilled lemon oil. It’s not recommended to use lemon juice on your face.

Storing Suggestions

Since this lemon honey and sugar scrub contains fresh lemon juice, it should be stored in the fridge and has a shelf life of about a week.  Be sure to keep the container clean and relatively dry.

Tips & Variations

  • For extra exfoliation, add a couple of tablespoons of lemon peel powder.
  • Some people are sensitive to citrus juices. It’s always best to conduct a patch test before using this scrub on your body.
  • Feel free to use orange or grapefruit juice instead of lemon juice.
  • Since this scrub only lasts for about a week, I recommend making it in small batches you know you can use in time.

FAQs

Can I use raw honey in a sugar scrub?

Absolutely! Raw honey is a fantastic option for sugar scrubs. It’s best to use raw, unpasteurized honey if you’re trying to use it for healing damaged skin.

What is the best oil to use in a sugar scrub?

I prefer to use almond oil, coconut oil, or olive oil in my sugar scrubs. Coconut oil can either be too firm or too wet depending on the temperature and olive oil has a notable scent. Almond oil is a great middle choice. I also like jojoba oil, but it’s quite pricey!

Should you use sugar scrubs on your face?

Although you technically can, I do not recommend it. The sugar crystals are naturally abrasive, which is great for dry skin on your legs or arms, but the skin on your face is very sensitive. Sugar can be too harsh for your face and may result in irritation. Citrus acids can cause burns, so it’s very important to use them safely.

If you have sensitive skin, be sure to only use this skin on your body and consider using just lemon zest instead of juice or oil.
