We’ve all been there. The butter is at room temperature, the oven is preheated, and the stand mixer is running. Suddenly, you realize you are all out of cream of tartar or just used the last of the chocolate chips.

You can either try to make do with a substitute from the pantry, or you can stop everything and rush to the store…Either way, your plans are disrupted.

If you can take a little time before the holiday season begins to set up your pantry, you’ll have all the essentials you’ll need ready to go!

Thanksgiving Pantry Staples

You’ll notice there is just one page here and that’s because I find we often make similar ingredients for both Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas.

  • Turkey or chicken
  • Potatoes (for mashed potatoes)
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Eggs
  • Butter
  • Cream cheese and/or sour cream (great in mashed potatoes and corn casserole)
  • Fried onions (for green bean casserole)
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Milk
  • Aromatic veggies (garlic, onions, celery, carrots)
  • Fresh cranberries
  • Pumpkin
  • Chicken stock
  • Corn (for corn casserole)
  • Cranberries (for cranberry sauce)
  • Pecans (for pecan pie; we use maple syrup instead of corn syrup)

We also make stuffing, which I make with homemade cornbread, but you may prefer sourdough stuffing or even the boxed stuff. This is why there is a “family favorites” section on this list. If you need to grab buttermilk for cornbread, add it there. The cornmeal and flour are already in the baking section!

Plus, this list includes all the dried herbs you need for an exquisite turkey (sage, thyme, parsley, rosemary) and warming spices for the best pumpkin pie.

Where to Shop for Pantry Staples

My favorite places to stock up on pantry staples include:

  • Bulk ingredients: Azure Standard and Costco
  • Fresh produce: Farmers’ market or local farm stand
  • Dairy: Local grocery store
  • Spices & seasonings: Burlap & Barrel or Azure Standard
  • Meat: Local farm stand or higher-quality grocery store

Christmas Pantry Staples

As noted above, we usually end up making many of the same (or similar) recipes for Christmas dinner, and they start with the same base ingredients. We often have ham with mashed or scalloped potatoes, sauteed green beans (with bacon!), a nice big winter salad, and more.

  • Ham
  • Potatoes
  • Eggs
  • Butter
  • Cream cheese
  • Heavy cream
  • Milk
  • Aromatic veggies
  • Green beans
  • Bread flour (for dinner rolls)
  • Dried herbs and seasonings (sage, thyme, rosemary, parsley, kosher salt, and black pepper)

  • Cloves
  • Star anise (great in cranberry sauce!)
  • Cream of tartar (essential for meringues and snickerdoodles)

Pro Tip: Use the Best Spices!

The quality of your recipes hinges on the quality of your ingredients. The spices from Burlap & Barrel are hands-down the best quality you can find.

All of their spices are grown using organic methods on small family farms around the world. They’re never irradiated and have the absolute best flavor.

Order your next batch of spices through them and get a FREE bottle of Robusta Black Peppercorns (1.8 oz grinder-top bottle)! Just be sure to add the peppercorns and $15 worth of products to your cart, then use code MILKGLASSHOME.

Other Holiday Ingredients

There are other ingredients you may need for your favorite recipes, but they aren’t quite as universal. Add them to the “family favorites” section to ensure you have everything you need!

Here are some things you may need for your favorite holiday recipes:

  • More cooking oils (vegetable oil, coconut oil, olive oil, etc)
  • Lard or shortening (we don’t cook with shortening but I know many of us have old-fashioned family recipes that use it specifically)
  • Red or white wine
  • Dried fruit (dried cranberries, raisins, apricots, etc)
  • Olives
  • Pickles
  • Oysters
  • Vinegar (different types for homemade salad dressings)
  • Fresh herbs
  • Seasonal produce (brussels sprouts, butternut squash, winter greens, persimmons, apples, pears, etc)
  • Marshmallows
  • Canned pineapple
  • Candy canes
  • Candy melts
  • Cheese
  • Oats (for oatmeal cookies!)
  • Bacon
  • Different flavors of chocolate chips (butterscotch, white chocolate, etc)

This is just the start! I like to keep a well-stocked pantry all year long and use my pantry staples list like a shopping list throughout the year. This Christmas pantry staples list is more in-depth than my standard list and makes it easy to keep your pantry stocked during the festive season.
