Spicy hot honey has become one of the most popular condiments, but save your cash and make it at home! You still get the sweet, tangy, fiery flavor without having to leave the comfort of your home. Plus, this spiced honey recipe is ready in about 1 minute!
Instead of rushing to the grocery store, grab a few ingredients from your pantry to make your own spicy honey sauce for French fries, cheese plates, drizzling over roasted vegetables, and more! This spicy-sweet condiment is the perfect garnish for countless dishes and is a must-have in any home kitchen. Fortunately, it’s also super easy to make and requires about 1 minute of effort. Easy!
We like to drizzle it over egg sandwiches, avocado toast, buttered English muffins, and so much more. We’ve been putting it on everything.
Plus, it makes such a great gift for the holidays and housewarming parties. (No one will know it only took you a minute to make, either!)
If you love infused honey recipes, try my vanilla infused honey in tea or spread over scones or this warm cinnamon honey.
Ingredients
- Raw honey – You want sweet, free-flowing honey instead of crystallized stuff (save that for whipped honey). Instead of heating the honey, which is not recommended, you’ll heat the vinegar. Be sure to use pure honey with a mild flavor, like this orange blossom honey.
- Apple cider vinegar – For a tangy kick and to make the honey more liquid. This is optional, but I find it helps bring out the heat quite nicely.
- Red pepper flakes – This is key! Use whichever type of pepper flakes you like.
I got everything for this recipe at Azure Standard! I didn’t realize that until after, but they have such great quality pantry staples and spices. Very convenient and affordable, too.
How to Make Spiced Honey
1. Pour the honey into a measuring cup or small bowl.
2. In another small dish, add the vinegar. Microwave for 15-30 seconds.
3. Add the red pepper flakes to the hot vinegar to hydrate them. Stir well.
3. Pour the hot vinegar chili mixture into the honey and stir well to incorporate.
4. Transfer to an airtight container and store at room temperature in a cool, dry place.
Storing
Store the hot honey in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for several months (or longer). Since all of the ingredients are shelf stable, it is safe to store out of the fridge and will last a long time.
If you add fresh chilis, you will need to store your hot honey in the fridge instead of the pantry.
If your honey begins to crystallize or thicken, then I would recommend gently heating the jar of honey in a saucepan with water over low heat until it thins out. Don’t microwave it or heat it to a high temperature.
What to Put Hot Honey On
Think of this as a spicy condiment perfect for pairing with your savory entrees and sides.
I like to add it as the sweetener to salad dressings, drizzle it over fried chicken or chicken wings, serve it on sausage breakfast sandwiches for a little sweetness, drizzle over goat cheese on a charcuterie board, enjoy instead of regular honey on whole wheat scones or biscuits, or spoon over roasted honeypatch squash, whipped feta, and your favorite roasted veggies. So lovely!
Tips & Variations
- Adjust the spice level. For a milder recipe, use fewer red pepper flakes or try peppers with a milder heat with lots of flavor, like Silk Chili. For a brighter heat, add some hot sauce or a small amount of cayenne pepper. You can also use your dehydrated jalapeno peppers (ground into a powder)!
- Add other spices. To keep this recipe shelf-stable, only add dry spices, not fresh ingredients.
- Let it sit. The longer it sits, the more the flavors infuse together.
- Avoid heating the honey. This can damage the enzymes in it.
- Stir before using. As the mixture sits, the red pepper flakes will float to the top. That’s natural.
- Heat the vinegar separately. If you microwave the vinegar with the peppers, the peppers will likely spill out and make a big mess. Use a small bowl at least 1-2 inches deep to keep the vinegar contained.
FAQs
Yes, but I don’t recommend it, and it’s not necessary. Microwaving the vinegar will warm up the honey just enough without overheating it.
Not this version. It’s shelf-stable since it only contains dried spices, vinegar, and honey. If you use any fresh ingredients (fresh chili peppers, etc.), you will need to store them in the fridge and use them in about a week. This will likely cause the honey to crystallize, but it’s the best way to prevent mold from growing.
That’s totally optional. I don’t mind the little pieces of red pepper flakes in the honey, but if you do, pour the honey through a fine mesh strainer, then transfer it to a clean jar. Easy!
