Food Preservation

Preserving food is one of my very favorite hobbies! Not only is it a great way to save some money and make the most of the produce from your garden, but it’s just plain fun.

I love trying to figure out what to do with too much dill or too many apples. This abundance leads us to get creative and try new flavor combinations and recipes. For example, I enjoy using different preservation methods like canning to store fruits and veggies, or dehydrating herbs and other ingredients for long-term storage. And don’t forget about freezing produce to enjoy it year-round.

Plus, food preservation ties us to the people who can before us, who had to preserve food to survive. We’re fortunate today to be able to get anything we need at the grocery store at any time, but it feels good to remember these people and follow in their footsteps.

In this section, you’ll find a wide range of posts about putting food up for later. These are a few of the methods I like to use and that you’ll find on this site:
– Freezing food
– Canning
– Drying
– Dehydrating
– Infusing (extracts, sugars, flavored vinegars, herb salts, syrups)
– and much more!

rachael from milk glass home in a kitchen with a water bath canner and apple butter.
Hi, I'm Rachael!

I’m a self-taught home cook, gardener, and former farmers’ market manager who loves slow, seasonal living.

My kitchen is always full of baskets of seasonal produce, cookies cooling, and the next batch of jars ready for the canner. It’s a little messy and definitely chaotic, but always creative, delicious, and full of fun.

No shortcuts, no canned cream-of-anything soups; just real food, old-fashioned skills, and a little inspiration to bring the seasons into your own kitchen.
